Description
How to Use Hydrocortisone Topical Cream
Application: Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin area 1 to 3 times daily as directed by your doctor.
Avoid: Do not get the cream in your eyes. Wash your hands after applying.
Covering: Do not use tight, non-breathable dressings (like plastic wrap or diapers) over the treated area unless your doctor says it’s okay.
Duration: Use for up to 4 weeks. If symptoms last more than 7 days, contact your doctor.
Missed Dose: Apply as soon as you remember, but skip if close to the next dose. Don’t double the dose.
Storage and Disposal
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture.
Keep out of reach of children.
Don’t flush or throw medication in the trash. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of it safely.
Who Should NOT Use It?
Allergy to hydrocortisone or corticosteroids
Certain viral infections (herpes simplex, chickenpox, vaccinia)
Untreated skin infections like tuberculosis, fungal, or bacterial infections
Possible Side Effects
Common: Burning, dryness, irritation, redness, itching, skin rash, increased redness or scaling
Serious (contact your doctor ASAP):
Visible blood vessels under skin
Skin color changes
Excess hair growth
Poor healing
Painful or pus-filled blisters
Signs of steroid overuse (e.g., acne, thinning skin, unusual face or body changes)
Stop immediately and seek emergency care if allergic reactions occur (swelling, difficulty breathing, severe rash).
Important Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have allergies, other health issues, are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Don’t use dressings or diapers over treated skin unless advised.
Avoid applying near eyes to prevent serious eye issues.
Don’t use to treat vulva itching with discharge.
Long-term or extensive use can cause systemic steroid side effects (e.g., acne, high blood sugar, thin skin, etc.).
Children absorb more and may have more side effects—consult your doctor before use.
Drug Interactions
Possible interaction with aldesleukin and calcipotriol.
Tell your doctor about all other medications, supplements, and habits like caffeine, alcohol, or smoking.
